How to Reduce iPhone Photo Storage Without Losing Quality (2026)

You open Settings, tap General, tap iPhone Storage. Photos: 22 GB. You stare at it for a second because you haven't been shooting anything particularly interesting — some food, a few screenshots, videos of the dog. Nothing that should add up to 22 gigabytes.

Two things are probably inflating that number. One is a camera setting that ships in the wrong default for anyone who mostly uses Apple devices. The other is the slow accumulation of burst sequences, near-identical shots, and duplicate videos that never get cleaned up. You can fix both without losing anything you actually care about.

Start Here: The Format Setting Makes the Biggest Difference

Go to Settings > Camera > Formats. If it says Most Compatible, your iPhone is saving every photo as JPEG and every video as H.264. These formats open everywhere — Windows, Android, old software, whatever. They're also significantly larger than they need to be.

The video row is worth paying attention to. A 10-minute 4K clip in H.264 is about 3.5 GB. Same recording in HEVC: under 2 GB. If you shoot much video at all, this matters.

Live Photos Are Quietly Doubling Your File Sizes

Every Live Photo is a still image plus a three-second video clip bundled together. It sounds minor. It isn't — each Live Photo is roughly double the file size of a standard photo, and unless you've deliberately turned it off at some point, it's been on for every shot you've ever taken.

Honestly, this is close to a design flaw. Live Photos are genuinely nice for the right moment. But having them on constantly means you're storing a micro-video for every photo of a receipt, a whiteboard, a price tag, or a package barcode. That's most of what people photograph.

In the Camera app, tap the Live Photo icon (the concentric circles at the top) to turn it off. It stays off until you explicitly enable it. Save it for moments that actually move.

The Hidden Culprit: Near-Duplicates and Burst Photos
